Client: Ah Lecks

This series of artworks was done for the Youtuber known as Ah Lecks, for his youtube video essay “Strange Depictions of Hell”, which has gained over 500k views.
Ah Lecks pitched this concept as dark and mysterious, based on depictions from the book “House of Leaves” by Mark Z. Danielewski
The Problem:
The client needed a visualizer for his video, and for the visuals to be very dark with great lighting. Moreover, there was no light in these scenes in the book, which was a problem I had to plan around; I made sure to use very distinct lighting.
The Solution:
The solution was to create a set inside a 3D program (Blender) and use the storyboards (provided by the client) to create a moody environment.
The Process:
Using Blender, I created a set modelled after the descriptions in the House of Leaves book. Lighting was a key component to this project; the shapes and sets were supposed to be very simple, while lighting plays a major role.
The lighting is invisible as there are not supposed to be lights inside the dark hallways, so I utilized point lights and made sure the source did not show, but the light bounces did.
To finish, I used Photoshop to stylize the grainy texture similar to most of my artwork. Moreover, I applied a gradient map to get a cold hue for the lighting and to create a contrast with the pitch black shadows.
The Outcome:
The final pieces came out great; the contrast with the lighting was perfect for the mood of the video and the book it was referencing. The creation process was very smooth, and the client’s feedback was taken into account for the final.
